“Tunneling machine “

You are the chief engineer of the Spartan army. Your enemies are on the other side of a large mountain range. Climbing or going around the mountain range is a very arduous task. You and a few engineers are supposed to design a manually operated tunneling machine that can tunnel through the mountain for the army to pass through.

Design a manually operated tunneling machine using junk available. You are supposed to design three mechanisms that are manually operated
1. Tunneling mechanism (design of the drill/blades).
2. Debris/mud removal mechanism.
3. Mechanism for the movement of the machine.

Note: The mud removal mechanism should not be operated separately. It should be coupled with the machine movement mechanism. Whereas tunneling mechanism can be independent.

Elimination Round 1:

First elimination round will test the contestants for design, application and hands on skills like workshop techniques (machining, fitting etc). You need to provide answers to these questions about your design :

Design Specifications

1. Clearly demonstrate the special features of your design, features that, in your opinion, are specially clever and effective.
2. Point out the deployment of the junk materials clearly.
3. Explain about the use of the additional junk material (if used).
4. Explain where have you used machining, welding, etc and why?

Sample Abstract

1. Properly labeled drawing(showing junk materials) with
   a. Proper dimensioning
   b. Sites of joining
2. Design Specifications as mentioned above (in the given order).

Final Evaluation will be based on following points.

1. Functionality, feasibility
2. Assembly details(shown in sketch)
3. Innovation
4. Your solution should be realistic and must use stuff which can be easily found in junk.

ELIMINATION ROUND 2:

The qualifying teams will be given the Problem Statement for Kritika just after first round gets over. The shortlisting for the final round will be specified later.

Other details (such as junk availability, winning criteria etc.) will be provided along with the problem statement.

ON CAMPUS EVENT(ROUND 3):

The teams that have been finalised for on campus event are supposed to construct the real machine using the given junk.
The criteria for winning will be informed later.

GENERAL RULES :

1. Maximum 4 members per team.
2. Judges decision will be final.
3. Any arguments during the competition with organizers or judges will lead disqualification of the team.
4. Using any other junk, apart from that provided, will have to get prior permission from the organizers.
5. If you have any discrepancies with the junk, it has to be informed earlier. Complaints during the time of competition will not be entertained.
6. All the members of the team are supposed to be present at the time of competition.

The solution for problem statement of round 1 are to be submitted before 25th JAN 12:00 noon. Either mail the soft copy of the design to srini88.ragz@gmail.com having subject kritika round 1

Or submit your hard copies at room no 156 or 338, hostel 7. Late entries are not taken.
