CADing

CADing is an event to test your technical design as well as your CATIA skills. A certain machine or its component has to be designed and modeled on CATIA to ensure your seat in the final round.

  1. The competition will be held in two rounds, the elimination round and the final onsite round.
  2. The teams will comprise of two members who may be from the same or different years and maybe from any branch.
  3. There will also be a bonus prize for the best design in the elimination round which will be declared after the event is completed.
  4. The Final Round will be on the spot designing and modeling competition based on your CADing and engineering skills.

Completely design a screw jack for a lifting load of 100 KN and a maximum lift of 200 mm. The total height must not exceed 500 mm when the screw is at its bottommost position. There is no limitation on the total area covered by the apparatus. A 3D model must be designed using CATIA and should a spec sheet containing the details of each part, is to be submitted. Following are the details involved in designing a simple screw and nut screw jack:

  1. The screw jack will consist of a main body on which the rest of the parts will be mounted.

  2. It will consist of a screw used to transmit power. The choice of the threads (e.g. square helical etc.), the pitch, helix angle, etc. should be taken care of precisely. The maximum lift should also be kept into consideration. The shaft containing the threaded screw will also have to accommodate a removable handle and a cup at the top.

  3. The nut will join the body to screw and should be fastened to the body using appropriate fasteners so as to prevent any relative motion.

  4. The handle should be designed so as to transmit the appropriate torque considering an average force applied by a human being. Bending stresses should also be taken into account.

  5. A seat should be mounted at the top which will be in physical contact with the load and will take up the vertical loads. The seat should be fastened to the power screw using appropriate fasteners keeping into consideration that there should not be any relative motion between the seat and the vertical load.

  6. An appropriate factor of safety should be chosen.

  7. The materials of each part should be chosen accordingly.

  8. The product should be designed for simplicity in operation and robust construction.

  1. The Specifications mentioned above are just an example of a simple screw and nut screw jack. However, the teams are free to come up with any other designs keeping in mind the load and space constraints, its simplicity and ease of use. The different designs can be anything like the worm type screw jack or ball screw jacks etc.

  2. The innovative designs and any anything different from the conventional would also attract points.

  3. The shape of the body, the choice of the screw thread, the nut and the other components are the sole choice of the designer.

  4. Different parts can have different materials and the participants are supposed to mention the approximate strength and other constants for each material.

  5. Cost of manufacture of 100 such units will be calculated. Cost will be computed on the basis of number of parts, cost of material, man power, machining costs etc.

  6. Any other detail should be suitably assumed.

  7. In the spec sheet the specifications of each part should be mentioned along with the steps of design and the various constants assumed.

  8. The choice of the constants like coefficient of friction etc. is to be done so as to maintain a proper balance between the price of the product and its efficiency.

  9. Points will be awarded on the basis of the design steps, the details kept into consideration, the materials chosen, the accuracy of the 3-D model etc.

  10. The aesthetics of the product will also fetch some points.

  11. The 3-D assembly of the jack has to be submitted along with the individual parts.

  12. A bonus prize will be awarded to the best design presented during the elimination round.

The Final Round will be on the spot designing competition based on your cadding and engineering skills.
